Investigation Tools: Test Methods

Different situations may need one or more test methods depending on a variety of factors.  It is important to know what each test method can not prove before you say with any certainty what each test method can prove.

For instance, the industry largely relies on spore trap air samples to assess microbial indoor air quality. The test method is fast and non-intrusive with economical lab fees.  This test method will not allow identification of the various species of Penicillium, Aspergillus, Wallemia, Paecilomyces, etc.  They each produce conidia (asexual spores) that appear clear with round to slightly oval shapes measuring 2 to 5 micrometers.  It may be important to know if your indoor environment is Penicillium chrysogenum or Aspergillus versicolor.  An inexpensive test method may not be too inexpensive if you are suffering health effects from mold.  This test method may be fine for an initial screening as long as there are no health complaints.
